New Art Exhibit Opens at NVRH Gray Gallery: Cecelia Kane
ST. JOHNSBURY, VT (July 18, 2022) – The Charles M. and Hanna H. Gray Gallery at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH) is excited to announce the opening of its newest exhibit, “How Am I Feeling Today? 1-89 Days” by artist Cecelia Kane. The exhibit, which opens on July 21, 2022, will run until September 12, 2022.
Cecelia Kane is an artist who works with paint, performance, video, fabric and earth. She describes her work as delving inside the universe of self and being.
“In this self-portrait series I’m investigating the nature of my Self, which seems to be a mixture of my feelings, thoughts, my aging body, and a strong connection to my mother in the guise of her trove of over 100 vintage family handkerchiefs that I wore as a child in the breast pocket of my Catholic school uniform,” Kane said.
This work is a study of identity as seen through her bathroom mirror. It is based on 89 photographs that she took on consecutive days in 2009. 89 is also the number of years her mother lived.
“At the time, I identified my emotion, embodied that feeling on my face, wrote it in lipstick on my forehead, and snapped a selfie in the mirror,” Kane said. “I laser printed the 89 photos on Mom’s hankies, and slowly quilted, beaded and painted on the handkerchiefs for eleven years during quiet times alone, or sitting with friends.”
Kane has performed and exhibited at many art venues across the USA. She has been a curator, visiting artist, guest lecturer, performer, community artistic project director, teacher and graphic producer. She has also held numerous residencies and she has been the recipient of several grants to produce artistic projects. She proudly traces ancestors who arrived in Vermont from the Irish Potato Famine in the 1840’s, and served in the American Civil War, farmed, and worked on the Rutland Railroad. Cecelia Kane lives and creates in Peacham, Vermont.
The Charles M. and Hanna H. Gray Gallery is located on the hospital’s main floor. The exhibit will be on display July 21 through September 12, 2022. All exhibited art is for sale and a portion of the proceeds benefit the NVRH ARTs program.
