ST. JOHNSBURY, VT (September 17, 2025) – The Hanna and Charles Gray Gallery at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH) is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit by mosaic artist Mary Tapogna.
Born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, Mary attended art school at The University of Cincinnati and graduated with a BFA in Photography from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She worked for years as a photojournalist and freelance photographer in Portland, Oregon. She began an artistic exploration with mosaic that soon grew into exhibits, commissioned projects, and eventually a storefront gallery and studio that became an arts and community fixture in Portland.
In 2014, she completed a month-long artist residency at Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury, teaching mosaic techniques and creating public art. In 2022 she made Vermont her permanent home.
Mary’s mosaic work is constructed using found and recycled materials and spans a range of religious and secular imagery. “Traditional mosaics—meticulously built from countless pieces of glass and tile—remain a source of inspiration,” she says in her artist’s statement “and I honor that tradition while incorporating contemporary, unconventional materials and subject matter.” Her work can be found in both public and private collections around the world; a recent project close to home is the sign for the Cobleigh Library in Lyndonville.
The exhibit will be on display at The Charles M. and Hannah H. Gray Gallery located on the hospital’s main floor from September 18 through November 10. 25% of all sales from the exhibit will directly benefit NVRH and its mission to provide exceptional care to our community.
