NVRH awards $15,000 in grants to promote good health and well-being in the NEK
ST. JOHNSBURY, VT (January 13, 2025) – The Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH) Community Health Fund Advisory Committee awarded a total of over $15,000 in grants to Village of Mothers, RuralEdge, Town of Lyndon for the Fenton Chester Arena, and Kingdom East School District.
These grant recipients will provide a range of programs that will ensure food access and connection to local resources; provide education and postpartum support; enhance youth sports and long-term athlete engagement; and provide access to outdoor physical activity opportunities for underserved youth.
- Village of Mothers: Village of Mothers will enhance their “Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Group” in the Northeast Kingdom as a means to provide social, emotional, and educational support. The group will provide individuals in the perinatal period with educational resources to empower them in their motherhood journey, overcoming isolation that may be experienced in the early postpartum months. The group aims to provide free monthly education, incorporating critical topics presented by subject matter experts, such as empowerment workshops, maternal health advocacy workshops, Perinatal Mood Disorder education, and birth planning.
- RuralEdge: The Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food Pantry is a resident-initiated program to support local community members with food access. The goal of this pantry is to help those in need by providing them with a source for food assistance. Additionally, the pantry will provide information regarding other community partners and resources that can support individuals with their food security and other needs in order to live a healthy and prosperous life.
- Town of Lyndon: The Town of Lyndon will leverage donor funds in conjunction with Community Health Fund resources to expand the Fenton Chester Arena equipment. This expansion will modernize the arena for the 8-year-olds and under (8U) youth hockey program to keep the program competitive and maintain or increase participation levels. Creating conditions that foster engagement of youth 8 and under will lead to long-term athlete retention, increased community connectedness for players and their families, and the disease prevention benefits associated with being physically active.
- Kingdom East School District: Kingdom East School District (KESD) will implement a Winter Activities Program for students at Lyndon Town School and Concord School. KESD will support students to participate in an array of winter activities, including skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and swimming, alleviating the financial barriers for interested students to become lifelong participants in local, healthy winter activities.
The NVRH Community Health Fund, which is rounding out its thirteenth consecutive year – awarding over $115,000 total – ensures continuous funding for community health programs and services that help to improve the health and quality of life for all people in the community. The priority for the current funding cycle is health promotion and disease prevention.
