Local School to Host Family Skill Program With Support of NVRH Prevention Services

Thursday, March 14, 2019

Starting on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, the Waterford School will host Strengthening Families Program (SFP) 10–14, a seven week program for fifth graders and their parents and/or caregivers thanks to the support of NVRH Prevention Services.

SFP is an evidence-based family skills-building curriculum that focuses on improving family communication and academic success. The program will meet every Wednesday (excluding April 17 due to school vacation) at the Waterford School from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

In these sessions, families will learn how to support their fifth grader’s goals and aspirations by building positive relationships, bettering their listening skills, and implementing new ways to problem solve. Fifth graders will also learn a variety of life skills, from how to resist peer pressure and understand their parents’ and caregivers’ rules, to managing set responsibilities and coping with their feelings in ways that are both healthy and productive. Certified SFP 10–14 program facilitators will lead sessions with parents, fifth graders, as well as the entire family that incorporate communication skills through projects and games. There will be a light dinner and childcare will be provided for siblings who are not in the fifth grade. There will be other incentives as well.

Registration for this Strengthening Families Program, which is limited to 10 families and will be on a first-come, first-served basis, is open to area fifth graders and their families. It is not limited to Waterford students. Call the Waterford School to register at 802-748-9393.

Funding is made possible in part by the Regional Prevention Partnerships grant initiative, which is the result of a cooperative agreement with the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The Regional Prevention Partnerships grant is implemented locally through NVRH.
