Corporators, Leaders Gather for NVRH Annual Meeting

Friday, December 7, 2018

Meeting highlighted organizational achievements, new CEO and new regional prosperity fund

More than 150 corporators and leaders from Northeastern NVRH attended the organization’s annual meeting on Tues., Dec. 4 at Northern Vermont University. The meeting, which marked the end of NVRH’s 2018 fiscal year, highlighted organizational achievements from the past year, included election and re-election of corporators and featured remarks from NVRH CEO Shawn Tester, NVRH Board Chair Tom Robinson and Passumpsic Bank President Jim Kisch.

In his opening remarks to attendees, Robinson summarized highlights from the hospital’s fiscal year, including posting a positive operating margin; completing the renovation of the Birth Center; receiving a Certificate of Need for the MRI replacement and expansion project; beginning renovations on expanded space for sleep medicine and pulmonary services; recruiting 15 new physicians and advanced practice providers; and introducing additional music programming for hospital patients. Another noted achievement was the recruitment of new CEO Shawn Tester, who began his role at NVRH in November following the retirement of former CEO Paul Bengtson.

“Thank you [corporators] for your support of NVRH throughout the year. With your ongoing commitment to NVRH, we look forward to continuing to build upon the great work of the NVRH organization,” Robinson said, before introducing Tester.

Tester spoke about NVRH’s tactical priorities for the upcoming year, including successfully implementing the new payment model for Medicaid patients; providing ongoing electronic medical record support to providers; addressing increasing emergency department patient volumes and mental health patient volumes; kicking off the second phase of NVRH’s capital campaign; and ensuring the smooth transition of newly acquired Northern Physical Therapy into NVRH.

“Together, we will be focused on these tactical priorities, navigate our way through evolving payment reform and lead true healthcare reform in Vermont,” Tester said.

Part of healthcare reform involves addressing large-scale social problems in a systemic approach, which, in turn, affects the health of individuals and greater communities. As members of NEKProsper! – the Caledonia and Southern Essex Accountable Health Community – NVRH continues its work in addressing social determinants of health and being involved in initiatives such as the NEK Prosperity Fund. The evening’s guest speaker – Passumpsic Bank President Jim Kisch – presented about the newly established NEK Prosperity Fund.

The NEK Prosperity Fund focuses on “raising capital for NEK from those who love the NEK.” The fund is focused on community prosperity outcomes, and its payback model is focused on financial returns, loan repayment, public relations recognition and trickle-down benefits for a more prosperous NEK. While numerous early investors and supporters have been identified for the venture, organizations or individuals interested in fund investment options may contact NVRH VP of Marketing and Community Health Improvement Laural Ruggles at l.ruggles@nvrh.org.

“Prosperous communities are healthy communities,” Kisch said. “These investments will help lead to the region’s growth and prosperity.”

The 2018 NVRH Annual Report, which was distributed at the annual meeting, highlighted NVRH’s work in addressing social determinants of health and work toward regional prosperity, tied to NEKProsper! and efforts like the NEK Prosperity Fund.

NVRH Trustee and Chair of the Nominating Task Force Terry Hoffer concluded the evening by presenting 31 corporators up for re-election, 16 corporators up for election and four trustees up for re-election.
