Gauthier's Pharmacy Receives a Permanent Prescription Drug Disposal Kiosk

Friday, February 23, 2018

Gauthier’s Pharmacy has received a grant from the Vermont Department of Health, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs (ADAP).  The grant includes a permanent Rx disposal kiosk, up to four liners/boxes for the first year and technical assistance from the Statewide Disposal Program Manager, Mariann White. In addition, Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH) has agreed to pick up the cost of the liners/boxes beyond the first year. Cheryl Chandler, Regional Prevention Partnerships Coordinator for NVRH says, “It is imperative that community members safely store and throw away unused or expired medication to prevent the misuse of prescription drugs. We are grateful to Gauthier’s Pharmacy for providing the opportunity for community members to properly dispose of unused medications and the hospital is happy to partner with them in this effort.”

Gauthier’s Pharmacy was established in 1932. Carol Novick, owner and pharmacist, has consistently demonstrated her commitment to community health and wellbeing. For example, the pharmacy made the conscious decision not to sell tobacco products well over thirty years ago, and Carol has maintained that policy. “The medication drop box is a tremendous asset to the community and I’m happy to be part of it,” said Carol as she was presented with a plaque thanking her for her commitment to community health.

“Providing drug disposal as an option for a community is an important step in combating the current opioid crisis. Drug disposal boxes are a safe and easy method for disposing of unused or expired medication, which limits the chances of them ending up in the wrong hands,” says Mariann White, Coordinator of the Statewide Drug Disposal System.

Gauthier’s hours are 8:30-5:30 M-F; 9-3 Sat, closed Sun and major holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day. July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas).

Community members are reminded not to share prescription drugs, store them in a locked cabinet, and safely dispose of all unused prescription drugs.

Other permanent disposal sites may be found at the St Johnsbury Police Department 24 hours, 7 days per week; the Caledonia Sheriff’s Department, Monday through Friday from 8am-4pm; the Essex County Sheriff’s Department Monday through Friday from 8am-4pm; and the Lyndonville Police Department on Tuesdays from 8am.-8pm.
