Gratitude and Generosity

Thursday, February 8, 2018

Barbara and Chick Allen are tremendously grateful for the care they received just over a year ago at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. “Thank you for going the extra mile; it helped save my life,” stated Barbara. As a result of their gratitude, they gave a generous donation to provide for the new Results Waiting Area in the Emergency Department. The Allens have been supportive of NVRH for many years.

Brynn Evans, Director of Development and Marketing is thankful for the Allen’s leadership gift in support of the Emergency Department; the ER renovation is several years down the road as part of the Building A Healthy Future, Together Capital Campaign. The new Results Waiting Area is helping to bridge some of the facility/patient experience needs between now and the renovation project. Mike Moss, Director of Emergency Services is extremely grateful for the room, saying that the additional space allows for “so much – it makes such a difference to our patients and staff.”

The Allen’s primary residence is in Delaware, but they were at their home in Westmore when Barbara felt under the weather – very tired with shortness of breath – most unusual for her. It was a Friday, and not wanting to go through the weekend without seeing a doctor (and not having a local provider at that time) she called Dr. Tim Thompson. Although Dr. Thompson is retired, he was Barbara’s father’s physician; John L. Norris was the founder of the Northeast Kingdom’s legendary product, Bag Balm.

After seeing Barbara, Dr. Thompson told her she needed to immediately go to the Emergency Room. As is frequently customary, Dr. Thompson called the ER and alerted the staff. Once there, the Allens were seen by Mike Moss, Doctor of Nursing Practice and Director of Emergency Services at NVRH. With a systematic, sensitive, knowledgeable, thoughtful and compassionate course of action, Barbara had a battery of tests that led to a preliminary diagnosis including an abnormal amount of fluid around the lung.

General surgeon, Dr. Terry Larsen then removed a large volume of fluid from Barbara’s right lung. Chick was right there every minute -- a supportive, concerned, knowledgeable and strong advocate. The procedure to remove the fluid is exacting because puncturing the lung is a possibility. The fluid was then sent off for analysis since the large amount of excess fluid can be symptomatic of severe problems.

The Allens were in the ER for a total of seven hours. Knowing that the ultimate results could be very serious, they returned to Delaware the next day. Pam Brink, Care Manager handed them a CD with the complete results of every test Barbara had had. By the following Monday morning, they were sitting in their surgeon’s office back in Delaware. No additional tests were deemed necessary at that time since the team at NVRH had done such a thorough job with their findings and write-up.

Barbara’s diagnosis was Ovarian Cancer. After a series of chemotherapy treatments, surgery, and her final chemotherapy series last July, she appears hale and hearty and her cancer markers are almost nonexistent.   She currently has been declared clinically free of disease.  She and Chick are exceedingly grateful for the thorough and compassionate care received at NVRH. As Dr. Ryan Sexton, Medical Director of Emergency Services at NVRH said of the Allen’s visit, “As Emergency Department personnel, this is what we do. It’s humbling and gratifying to know how appreciative, grateful and supportive the Allens are.”
