Tom Ziobrowski, MD Retires after Almost 40 Years

Friday, December 29, 2017

“Tom Z,” as he is often referred to grew up in south central Pennsylvania, the son of a urologist and an English teacher. He went to Harvard where he roomed with Toby Balivet and began frequent visits to Toby's home in Danville, VT.   These visits continued during medical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, interrupted by a year studying the history and sociology of medicine.  During his residency in internal medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital, he still visited the Northeast Kingdom at least once a year, attracted by the escape from the city and the warm reception from friends in Danville, particularly Alice Hafner and Kate Beattie.  On one occasion, Jane Kitchel suggested that he came to visit so often, he might just as well move here!

Tom started practicing in the NEK in September 1978, working with Dr. Ardeschir Abadi in his clinic on Park Street, the site of the current Mayo Library on the Academy campus.  In 1981 he set up his own office in the old Fitch Clinic (where the Passumpsic Bank is now on Railroad Street), with the help of Nancy Bedard and Priscilla Bailey, then moved in May to Church Street, where he was soon joined by Frank Meierdiercks in 1984, and soon thereafter by nurse practitioner Elaine Robinson.

In those days, community physicians rounded on their hospital patients morning and evening, with office visits in between as well as frequent stints in the emergency room overnight.  One evening, while sleeping in the on-call room in the basement, he was awakened for an outside call from someone asking what to do because their dog had been sprayed by a skunk. He asked why they were calling him, and the person replied that they didn’t want to bother the vet!

Around 1993 NVRH took on the practice which later transitioned to a Federally Qualified Rural Health Center administered by Northern Counties Healthcare, which moved the practice to Sherman Drive in 2007.  Then in 2012, Drs. Meierdiercks and Ziobrowski elected to leave that practice and were gratified that NVRH stepped in and found a place for them to practice in office space that Dr. Ron Spaulding was leaving.  With much of the same staff, Dr. Claudia Lee, and nurse practitioner Jessica MacLeod, this became Kingdom Internal Medicine.  The practice expanded by remodeling the rest of the building when Dr. Robert Jauch retired.  Nurse Practioners Caryn Everett and Joyce Vitale soon joined, and now there are two new family practitioners, Drs. Irene Krechetoff and Dr. Thomas Myrter.

Practicing medicine for the nearly 40 years has seen many changes. One of Tom’s most gratifying moments was in 1985 when he ordered the first thrombolytic treatment here for a patient with a heart attack.

And what will Tom Z do in his retirement? The medical staff gave him the gift of viola lessons! Tom enjoys singing and playing classical guitar, and now wants to try something different. Tom will also be “helping out” with the Meditech go-live 6.16 in May.

Paul Bengtson sums it up this way, “Tom Ziobrowski is a wonderful person and a wonderful doctor.” Tom has felt well supported by NVRH, and appreciates its commitment to the overall health of the community.

Tom’s wife Beth Williams retired eight years ago and volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, as well as the History and Heritage Center. Later this year Beth and Tom are planning on visiting Beth’s son, Adam who is teaching at St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju in the Republic of Korea.  They also keep close ties in Burlington with Beth's daughter Sarah and son Tyler.
