Cynthia A. Swartz, MD Joins NVRH as Inpatient and Outpatient Consult Psychiatrist

Tuesday, October 17, 2017

Dr. Cynthia Swartz, board certified General Psychiatrist and board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist is working part-time as an inpatient and outpatient psychiatrist. She will be seeing patients on an advice-giving basis, making recommendations to providers for therapy and medication; she will not be seeing patients on a continued basis. Her goal is to provide a diagnostic clarification for providers and patients.

CEO Paul Bengtson welcomes Dr. Swartz. “We are fortunate that she is familiar with NVRH as well as the practices, and her clinical knowledge and expertise will be extremely helpful for patients, providers, and the entire care team. We are all looking forward to working with and learning from her.”

Dr. Swartz was born and raised in Shelburne, VT. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, going on to earn her Master’s degree in Music from the Indiana University School of Music. While in school, she founded and taught a Kindermusik program, dedicated to using the power of music to help children grow from birth through age seven, thought to be the most critical ages for brain development. It was during her time as a Kindermusik teacher working with parents and children that she realized her skill for listening and being of assistance.

After attending U Mass, Boston to complete pre-med science courses, she attended medical school at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, earning her MD in 2009; her residency was at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. She was also an instructor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School.

For the past three years, Dr. Swartz was an outpatient primary care psychiatrist at The Health Center in Plainfield, VT. She works with adults and children and has been a physician and lecturer in numerous capacities, including the Himalayan Health Exchange in northern India.

Dr. Swartz uses an integrative model in medicine – addressing the range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect the patient’s unique set of circumstances. Her commitment to working with a team of providers is an inclusive approach on behalf of the patient, including working with members of the regional community health team. She is available for medication consults with providers; the ongoing management of the medication will be maintained with the patient’s provider.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Swartz here at NVRH. Her knowledge and skill set, as well as her cool, calm demeanor will be a welcome addition on behalf of patients and providers. Dr. Swartz’s model of care aligns nicely with the hospital’s focus on the Patient-Centered Medical Home model,” said Laura Rooker, Director of Physician Practices.

Also very important to Dr. Swartz is her continued involvement with music. She plays in two orchestras: Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra in Barre Vermont, and the Northeast Kingdom Community Orchestra at Lyndon State College. She is on the steering committee as well as a teaching artist of the new Catamount Arts’ EPIC music program. The EPIC program is modeled after El Sistema, a program started in 1975 in Venezuela, finding effective ways to achieve youth development goals through the rigors and rewards of music.  With this new program, the violin is the starting instrument of choice, with visions of a youth orchestra in the future!
