Ryan Sexton, MD is New Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at NVRH

Friday, September 18, 2015

Ryan Sexton, MD, board certified in Emergency Medicine, is Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospitals new Director of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Sexton grew up in New Jersey, but has strong connections to our state. He attended medical school in Vermont, spent a year as a ski patroller at Mt. Snow, and his parents now run a bed and breakfast in Warren, VT. His wife, who is also an emergency medicine physician, grew up in Montpelier and was born at NVRH.

Dr. Sexton graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 2009. He has spent his medical career in Emergency and Disaster Medicine, completing his emergency medicine residency training in a busy urban emergency department at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, an affiliate of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  Following residency, Dr. Sexton completed a fellowship In EMS and Disaster Medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, also in Camden, NJ. He has since served as an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at Cooper Medical School, as the associate medical director of Emergency Medical Services, as the director of Wilderness and Tactical Medicine, and as a faculty physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Cooper University Hospital.

He has presented on numerous topics relating to Emergency Disaster Preparedness and EMS, including Hurricane Sandy medical response, mass shootings, healthcare disaster preparedness, tactical emergency medicine, biologic disasters, emergent treatment of opioid overdose, and emergent hemorrhage control. He is a member of the National Association of EMS Physicians, New Jersey Medical Reserve Corps, the Wilderness Medical Society, and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. During both Hurricanes Sandy and Irene, he participated on teams that provided medical shelters and emergency care to hurricane victims. Dr. Sexton has also worked closely with law enforcement agencies to educate police officers in officer down self-care and buddy-care medical interventions in the field.

He has been honored as the New Jersey American College of Emergency Physician Resident of the year, as a nominee for the New Jersey Department of Health Outstanding Emergency Services Physician, and received the Cooper Service Star for Outstanding Patient Service.

Dr. Sexton is very excited to be at NVRH. NVRH is a friendly and welcoming community, and I find this a tremendous opportunity to grow the Emergency Medicine program. I look forward to working with a great team in the ER, as the team atmosphere ultimately enhances patient care. The department is transitioning to all physicians being NVRH employees. We are seeking to employ only board certified emergency doctors, although we expect this transition to take one or two years. NVRH is already active in successful care coordination, so that every patient will have ongoing care with specialists and primary physicians as they leave the ER--this is very important to our patient population.

Seleem Choudhury, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at NVRH, is very pleased with Dr. Sextons appointment at NVRH. We recognize that our community desires a strong and talented emergency department that not only delivers first rate clinical care but also compliments it with compassion and vision. The ER is working hard to ensure that this occurs for the hospital and for our community. We recently saw a new addition to the nursing leadership with Michael Moss as the Clinical Operations Director of the ER. The addition of Dr. Sexton offers impressive experience in adult and pediatric emergency care, leadership, and Emergency Medical Services. Dr. Sexton has shared publically and privately that he is excited to lead NVRH and the Emergency Department through a needed change. We both agree it will be tough but the rewards will be immense and satisfying for the hospital and the community.

Both Dr. Sexton and his wife enjoy the outdoors, including downhill skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. They have a two-year-old son with another child expected this year.
